PROFILE OF PROF. KOLA M. OWONIKOKO – ACTING CHIEF MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF FEDERAL

UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL, ILA-ORANGUN

Prof. Kola Musliudin OWONIKOKO is the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso until his present appointment.

He hailed from Saki in Oyo State. He had his Primary School Education at LA Onikeke Primary School in Saki between 1974 -1979 and Modern School Education between 1979 and 1982 before proceeding to Ansar-ur-deen High School, Saki where he passed out with 7 distinctions at WAEC result. He also attended Government College, Ibadan for Advanced Level Education between 1986 and 1988. He had his undergraduate medical education in University of Ilorin between 1989 and 1997.

After completing the mandatory national service at Medical Center of the 3rd Division Rukuba Cantonment, Jos Plateau State, Prof. Owonikoko, joined the staff Medical Services of University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan in 1999 as a Medical Officer. He started his residency training in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University College Hospital, Ibadan in the year 2002 and obtained the Fellowship of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 2007 and the Fellowship of West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in 2008. His postgraduate qualification includes a Master of Sciences in Reproductive Health, University of Ibadan in 2008, Doctor of Medicine (MD) by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria NPMCN in 2022 and a Diploma Certificate in Minimal Access Surgery from Chelsea and Westminster Hospital UK in 2023.

His work experience includes housemanship at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital 1997-1998, at Medical Officer 3rd army Division Rukuba 1998-1999, Medical Officer University College Hospital Ibadan 1999-2002, residency training, University College Hospital, ibadan 2002-2009, Lecturer, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, 2009-2012, Senior Lecturer 2012-2015, Reader 2015-2019. and Professor 2019.  He did his sabbatical leave as a Senior Consultant and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ministry of Health, Aljouf Region, Saudi Arabia between 2019 -2021.

He had supervised over 15 postgraduate medical dissertations for fellowship of both West African College of Surgeons and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and he is an examiner in both colleges. He has also served as external examiner for various Master Degree Defense and undergraduate medical students examination.

He authored over 70 articles in highly reputable peer review journals. His major interest is Fertility research, endocrinology and minimal access surgery.

Prof. Owonikoko served the Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria LTH as Vice-Chairman in 2015-2016 and Chairman 2019-2020 through his efforts and his team the Oyo State Government approved the payment of Conmess for LTH doctors. He also served the University at various committee level including resident training Committee, Ethical Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Examination Committee, Welfare Committee among others. His community services include health awareness programmes, voluntary Obstetrics community services and rural surgical outreaches among others.      

He has received various awards and honour such as School Library prefect, Meritorious Service Award from the Commanding Officer, Chief Resident of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for eighteen months where he maintained high discipline, dedication and accountability among his peers.

Prof. Owonikoko is happily married, and the union has been blessed with children.
