The Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun (FUHSI), on Friday recorded a major milestone with the commissioning of several TETFund and Federal Appropriation–funded projects, reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening health sciences education in Nigeria.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering resolve to reposition Nigeria’s educational institutions to produce a skilled workforce capable of driving national development, particularly in the health sector.
The projects commissioned at FUHSI include the Senate Building, University Library, ICT Centre, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University Health Centre, University Gate and Access Road, College of Medicine, and University Electrification projects.
Dr. Alausa also highlighted the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI) recently launched by the Federal Ministry of Education, describing it as a comprehensive reform agenda spanning basic, technical, vocational, teacher, and tertiary education. He emphasised that health sciences education is a critical pillar of NESRI, noting that medical education is both a national security priority and a reflection of a nation’s level of civilisation.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), commended the Federal Government for prioritising tertiary education funding and reaffirmed TETFund’s commitment to the continuous development of public universities. He noted that the projects commissioned at FUHSI represent prudent utilisation of intervention funds and will significantly improve the quality of teaching, learning, research, and healthcare training. He assured the University of TETFund’s sustained support in the provision of infrastructure and capacity development to enhance academic excellence.
Also speaking at the event, elder statesman and former Governor of Osun State, Chief Bisi Akande, described the commissioning as a defining moment for both the University and the Ila-Orangun community. He applauded the Federal Government for siting the University in the area and investing in critical infrastructure that will not only advance medical education but also stimulate socio-economic development in Osun State and its environs. Chief Akande urged the University management to continue upholding high academic standards and to ensure that the facilities are well maintained for future generations.
The Vice-Chancellor and management of FUHSI expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government, TETFund, and the Ministry of Education for their continued support, noting that the newly commissioned projects will greatly enhance teaching, learning, research, and service delivery at the University.
The ceremony marks another significant step in FUHSI’s steady progress towards becoming a centre of excellence in health sciences education and research in Nigeria.
